Adidas Warehouse Sale Haul

On the starting day of the Adidas warehouse sale, I headed over there at around 6pm with my boyfriend. Luckily, it was located only 5 minutes away from where we lived, which usually isn’t the case for warehouse sales around the Greater Toronto Area. They’re always either at the Mississauga International Centre, or require a 30-minute drive. Upon arrival, there were cars everywhere moving in and out of the rural street, mostly resided by unknown factories. We walked in and were greeted by employees who handed us giant plastic bags to fill. The time was close to the start of the sale, so it was packed with people everywhere. It was a large, open warehouse with boxes of items in rows throughout the whole place. We did a quick tour of the place before going into individual spots, and saw a decent selection of shoes selling for $30 which normally retail for over $100.

There were Chinese people everywhere, obviously, because Markham is China central and they love a bargain no matter what it is. All of their giant bags were heavily filled, and I’m thinking how are you able to find so much?! I had to do a lot of digging into the boxes to find things I’d actually purchase and use. I’m a devotee to Adidas, and nearly all of my workout clothes are from them. I just really love the technology they’ve placed in their performance gear, like being able to sweat buckets and not have it appear on your shirt?! And where your sweat turns the shirt material into a cooler temperature to help you recover?! Sounds gross, but what you wear to exercise makes a difference in how you feel during the workout. I get bothered by people who wear regular cotton t-shirts to the gym and thick sweatpants; it retains a lot of moisture and that is what I would feel more grossed out by!

I knew my exact size was a small and I would never bother going for anything larger, just because I love a perfect fit, even if I really liked the style. The sports bras were $20, originally being at around $50, so I picked up two. They had some bright coloured ones too, like pink, aqua and mixed patterns. The t-shirts were $10 (great deal!), though I only found one I could wear for exercising. Most of them were more for casual wear. I loved the aqua-green colour of the long-sleeve ($15), so I had to get that too. I wish I could’ve found the short-sleeved version of it, but all the sizes were too big. I wanted to buy some tights, I believe they were only $15? But, I couldn’t find any small sizes. There were Reebok items too, as they are the same company, though I was more interested in buying from Adidas.

My boyfriend didn’t find anything he wanted from the men’s section, so he was sweet enough to wait in line for me while I looked around. He did find me the duffle bag though, and it was only $15! Usually, they’re around $50, so that was one of my happiest purchases since I needed one. The line up was extremely long, wrapping around the whole place; I had to decide whether or not it was worth it to wait an hour. I thought might as well since he’d been waiting in line for me for a while already. I purchased 5 items, all in which I’m satisfied with. I also didn’t feel too bad waiting for that long since the people in front of us only purchased two pairs of shoes. Depending on what you’re interested in, these warehouse sales can either leave you empty-handed in disappointment, or super thrilled with a bargain. The Adidas/Reebok warehouse sale is still going on, so make a stop if you’re interested. They usually have a new cycle of items they put out on different days, so you won’t exactly have to bare with the unwanted leftovers. Check out the flyer for it below!

Benefits of Green Tea

Being Chinese, I've always been exposed to drinking tea. It's always been mandatory to have tea served to you at a restaurant and when visiting a guest's home. Because of my grown taste buds to avidly drinking tea, I'd choose tea over coffee pronto. I've always wondered why black tea was more commonly served than green tea, and its because it has a stronger flavour and aroma. Although all types of teas have great beneficiaries whether its oolong, green, white, herbal or rooibos, green tea ranks the most superior.

I've never educated myself about tea and always thought they were reaped from different plants. In actuality, all teas are made from the leaves of the same species. The significant differences of tea type develop in the processing of the leaves. The distinguishing factor that will determine whether a tea plant will become white, green, oolong, or black tea is oxidation. Oxidation begins after the leaf has been plucked from the plant, and begins a process of being dried, withered, rolled, and heat treated. A black tea is fully oxidized, causing it to turn black, while a green tea is simply steamed (Japanese-style) or pan-fired (Chinese-style). Because green tea doesn't undergo oxidation, it becomes extremely rich in antioxidants and is believed to have more polyphenols preserved.

In the past months, it has become a morning ritual of mine where right when I wake up, I head downstairs to my kitchen and boil some water for my green tea. I take a seat, while sipping my tea for a couple of minutes and enjoy the soothing and relaxing aroma it permeates. I could literally inhale dried tea leaves all day, its scent is quite stimulating to my senses. It's packed with health benefits, including these:

1. Rich in Antioxidants
Scientists at Tufts University compared the "ORAC" (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, a measurement of the total antioxidant power of foods and other chemical substances) of black and green tea, and 22 fruits and vegetables, and found green tea brewed for five minutes outranked even so-called superfoods on the produce list. And EGCC, a catechin found in tea (shows highest levels in green tea) has been shown to protect DNA in cells from cancer-inducing changes. Antioxidants are essential for neutralizing and removing free radicals found in the bloodstream that can damage cells and cause disease.

2. Improves Dental Health
The catechins in green tea can kill bacteria and inhibit viruses. It can create sufficient contraction in your gums to keep them firm and tight on the teeth, thus preventing loosening and loss of teeth. Multiple studies also show it can reduce bad breath.

3. Weight loss
Green tea also helps people lose weight by enhancing the rate of metabolism, thereby promoting a faster consumption of the fat storage in the body. It helps the liver function more efficiently, boosting metabolism and burning fat.

4. Preventing Cancer
Numerous research has demonstrated that tea is beneficial in preventing cancer including prostate, pancreatic, breast, bladder, lung, and stomach. The catechins found in tea prevent cell mutation, deactivate certain carcinogens, and reduce the formation and growth of tumors.

5. Diabetes Prevention
If not taken with sugar, the alkaline nature of green tea helps to reduce the blood glucose level. The antioxidant and astringent qualities of green tea ensure good health and better functioning of the pancreas. Improving the function of the pancreas means a more efficient and regulated secretion of insulin, and the subsequent improvement in decomposing and absorbing sugar. This increase in effective functions can help prevent the onset of diabetes.

6. Healthy Heart
Green tea contains significant amounts of flavonoids, which are antioxidants that protect against heart disease by slowing the breakdown of LDL cholesterol, preventing blood clots, and improving blood vessel function. Green tea is also associated with lower cholesterol and lower rates of artery blockages.

7. Brain Boosting
Researchers in the Netherlands confirmed in a recent study that two green tea compounds, L-theanine and caffeine, can significantly boost levels of attention and alertness, building on what is already known about tea's brain benefits. Green tea is less likely to make you jittery and anxious than other energy-boosting drinks, because it contains lower levels of caffeine than other teas or coffee.

I normally only drink one cup of green tea a day in the morning, but to really increase the benefits, I think I'll start drinking it more throughout the day. It is recommended to have 3 cups a day to fully acquire the polyphenols and active antioxidant compounds found in green tea.

Spring 2015 Trends

GINGHAM

Diane von Furstenberg / Oscar de la Renta / Michael Kors

No, it's not a fashionable twist on gangnam style. Gingham is actually Dutch, meaning striped. This pattern normally found on picnic sheets has made its way to the runways. To me, it seems like the new plaid - simpler and checkered. Plaid was mostly found on tops and button-ups, but with gingham's one dimensional look, you'll be spotting them on pants and even blazers. It's a charming and sweet style, though I doubt it's here to stay for long.

COLOURED SUEDE

Chloe

Forget fur and leather, suede is making a comeback from the 70's. Spring is about introducing light shades into your wardrobe right? Well, now suede is popping up with all sorts of bright colours, far from the usual brown colour. I would expect this fabric to be lightweight and smooth to wear. This is also something that should be worn at a minimal and steered away from layering since the texture has enough impact.

SAFARI CHIC

Ralph Lauren / Jason Wu / Gucci

Feminine and empowering is what the safari trend seems to exude, after all, you have to be somewhat brave to venture into the wild jungle. Besides the apparent army green shade, animal and plant-like patterns are featured. It pairs perfectly with dark shades of brown, grey, and black.

OBI BELTS

Creatures of the Wind / Alexander Wang / BCBG

Influenced by the classic Japanese robe, an obi is a wide fabric belt. It gives a sharp accentuation, while being able to create an effortless silhouette. I would have never thought of wearing a belt over a blazer, but with the way these designers have put it, it looks like they were made to match.

KIMONO-STYLE TRENCH COATS

Suno / Thakoon / Tracy Reese

My favourite trend at the moment is the kimono-style trench coat, especially with all the vibrant selections of colours found for the Spring season. Its simple design and subtle lines can instantly elevate an outfit, or keep it casual with jeans. I just hope these long coats aren't one of those things you must always wear with heels to maintain a height balance. Overall, I think this trend is here to stay because it can be considered a classic piece, which can complement any item.

Winter Neutrals

I had purchased this Zara coat online during boxing day back in December, because it was 30% off everything. That time, I had been looking for a simple coat since for the winter season, I normally stick to wearing my long black jacket. I had high hopes this would be a lovely coat based on the website images, which most of the time are accurate for me. Though, once I received it in person, the sizing was off for a small. The sleeves were too long and the shoulder length wasn't on par, it was as if the marking for a size small was supposed to be a medium! I thought maybe it was just mine that was defective, so I tried to find stores that carried it to exchange, but none of them had a size small! Neither was it available online,  I figured Zara probably made a batch of defective sizes and they happened to realize it after. I liked the structure of this coat, so I decided since it was discounted from the boxing day sale, I would just get it tailored. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect peacoat though!
